The mascot for our opponents this week, the Wyndham Rugby Club U9s, is the Southern White Rhinoceros, no doubt the favourite attraction at the nearby Werribee Zoo. As Tom said to no one in particular after the first few tackles of the match, ‘I can see why they call them the Rhinos!’
That set the scene for a good, hard game of rugby. The boys certainly knew when they came off that they’d played a game and the mud and a little blood from the scraped knees proved the point.
But another point was being made out there as well today. This team of young men showed they could stick it, no matter the opposition.
Well led by our courageous, try scoring Captain Henry, the boys gave their all and although the scoreboard may have favoured the Rhinos, the pride of having played in that game was shared equally amongst all the players.
Beautiful line out feed
Our speed kept a smile on the face of the ref
Determination!
Classy line break
Explosive pace
Just before a massive side step
Our league topping breakdown work in action
No stopping him with the try line in sight
Impenetrable defensive line
How hard it was then to mark out one boy for our spirit of Kiwi Hawthorn medal, from a team that all played with great heart! But Leo the lionhearted was a worthy winner, not just for his tenacity this game, but all season, running at (and through) the opponent’s line and tackling their biggest players. Well done Leo!
For now, a well earned break before training recommences on 17 July ahead of our next game against Moorabbin. Thanks to all families for their great support throughout the term and special thanks to Claire for the great shots of the game!
