With our great volunteer photographers back in action it’s a return to our weekly match reports.

It was also a return to the green, green grass of home as we played on the newly resurfaced main field at John Gardiner Reserve – a luxury we’re not sure will last very long, but so nice to have while it lasts.

There was a mix up in game times that meant we started late and shared two of our boys with Powerhouse.  With our warmup running an hour, the boys were perhaps a little overdone by the end of the game, but still great fun.

Powerhouse are a good team, with some big runners so we needed to bring our A game.  Under the leadership of our Captain Charlie, it was great to see the boys controlling the breakdown so well – as every week goes by it becomes more and more obvious that we do that better than any other U9 team.

Unfortunately our tackling and passing let us down and we gave away too many soft tries.  Still, we know what we need to work on!

But it wasn’t all one-way traffic.  We scored a number of lovely tries with fast breaks for the corner and George doing his trademark run down the side line for a try.

Leo played Half-back and made a good fist of it and got a few nice line breaks and Luke played with great heart, tackling and running and never giving up, earning our Spirit of Kiwi Hawthorn medal for the day.

Well done Luke!

On a cold day it was great to finish with a hot snack.  Big thank you to our wonderful volunteer BBQ wonders!

Next week: Wydham at Wydham, a chance to improve our tackling!
