Australia’s rugby future shone a whole lot brighter on Saturday afternoon as our club’s very first female rugby team turned up with their families for their first run, showcasing grassroots rugby at it’s finest. The girls were presented with their new rugby jerseys and ran through some drills before lining up against our very own Junior boys for their first game of Inter-club non-contact 7’s, played under the Viva 7’s rules.
Clearly the boys were feeling very confident considering they had already achieved great results in their own junior games earlier in the day, and not to mention the obvious fact…they had played a LOT more rugby than our club’s newest team! Unfortunately for the boys there was a flaw in their thought processes, they had not seen how hard the girls had been training on Tuesday nights!
Alannah was named captain for the game and she led the team (Sunday, Isabella, Alice, Holly, Claire, Amelia, Jaimie, Poppy and Lola) out for this historic match. It didn’t take long at all for the girls to hit the lead with some masterful running and passing to score some beautiful tries. Their defence was more about width and drifting defence, making it very difficult for the boys to find any breaks.
It really was impossible to single out any of the girls as stars because every single one of them made us very proud of their effort on and off the field. In the end the captain Alannah was awarded the medal for Player of the Day.
Next week we will be lining up against the girls from Racing Rugby Club so we look forward to seeing you all back at our home ground for the game. Details will be emailed during the week, and we’ll see you all at training on Tuesday. As always, please feel free to bring along any friends or family that may want to become part of our great Juniors program….
