Welcome Powerhouse girls to Girls Viva 7’s!

The “Victorian Girls Viva 7’s” travelling roadshow continued today as Powerhouse RUFC welcomed nearly 40 girls from Kiwi Hawthorn, Eltham, Racing, Melbourne & the Harlequins. Its fantastic to see more clubs and girls coming along to play each week and today we were treated to some great rugby and a whole lot of fun from all teams.

Today however it was all about Powerhouse. Most of their girls were new to the game and had certainly never been together as a team. Once they got their bearings on the field, and worked out how to find the try line they were unstoppable. They should be very proud of their first up performance.

And if you’re wondering why there are no pics of our girls its because there weren’t any Kiwi Hawthorn players… actually there were but their coach forgot their rugby jerseys!! Thankfully our friends at Eltham saved the day by bringing a set of their jerseys, so we proudly donned the Eltham colours and out we went…

We were also privileged today to have the “big end of town” ref’s in orange (Brett & Chris) officiate on both fields so thanks gents for keeping it real! We hope to see you along to ref many more girls games in the future…..please!

Due to a few pre-planned ski trips and some illness, most of our girls were away as were our usual assistants, photographer, water girls etc etc. but we gratefully thank Paul M for his contribution today to coach our girls while their other coach went across to undertake the role of interim Powerhouse coach. Thanks also to Kevin from Racing for providing some great pics!

Coach Pete thinks there is a lot of potential within the Powerhouse Girls team and was very proud of how hard they worked and how quickly they picked up the basics, considering some of them had never played rugby!

By the end of the day the girls had enjoyed two games and again, it was encouraging to see a lift in tempo from all of the teams. It was also encouraging today to hear coaches and parents starting to discuss future fixtures, season formats and even pathways into girls & womens 7s. Exactly the conversations we need to keep going…..

We are fortunate to have hard working people in each of the clubs that are contributing to providing regular games and working hard to get girls along to play. At the end of the day we just need to turn up with the girls and as we witnessed today, the girls will take care of the rest!

Next weeks planned bye is likely postponed as the girls, parents & coaches still want to play on. So we plan to visit our friends at Racing in Brighton next Saturday  2nd around 12.30pm but please wait for confirmed time and location over the coming days. Beyond that date we are hosting at our home ground on Saturday 9th and the following Saturday 16th is the Quins 7s which we will have at least one girls team entered.

Again, a huge thank you to Powerhouse, in particular to Sinead for working hard to make today a great day for us all!

We look forward to doing it all again next Saturday…..
