Melbourne served up a beautiful crisp clear day for our first game of the 2018 season. Elias was appointed our Captain and led our brave band of young rugby fans with mighty heart against the skilful and determined team from Racing Rugby Club.
It was a special game for a lot of the boys: their first (official) game of tackle rugby and they certainly did their families and their club proud!
We ran in some absolutely beautiful tries, but it was never easy. Racing are a good young team with a couple of star players and it was only when we worked to spread the ball wide that the try line came into sight.
There was also some very hard working defence from our Redback boys, with everyone putting in a huge effort in chasing and tackling and ripping the ball.
Our breakdown work was a standout- a big improvement from last week with the boys protecting the ball very well.
More than anything else, Coach George and Justin were proud of the never-say-die spirit in which the boys played today. There were times when we had two or three tries run in against us, but every time our Redbacks came back to the line and fought on.
Congratulations to Darcy, winner of our ‘Spirit of Kiwi Hawthorn’ medal for his contribution today. Well done Darcy!
There are some very encouraging signs of a great little rugby team with this group of boys. We keep getting better with every game. Can’t wait till next week.
