Another sparkling Melbourne Autumn day – it was positively warm out there on the sidelines people!  But the action in the middle was even hotter as our boys took on the pride of the Melbourne Rugby Club, away.

After a quick warm up, Lucas was named our Captain for the day and put in a stirring performance, leading by example with two inspiring, straight down the middle tries.

The Unicorns had got off to a flying start with a couple of quick tries but the Redback boys fought on bravely and were rewarded before too long with quick ball from a solid scrum which half-back Henry passed cleanly to Elias then Devonte to Darcy who managed to get to the corner.  It was a confidence booster and the boys were in the game.

There was a fine work rate all round with Will, Leo and Tharran all breaking the Unicorns line.  Luke twisted and turned in tackles, Lewis was solid in the scrum and lineout.  George flew down the sideline to score a run away try as did Tom, both boys throwing themselves into tackling.

But our stand out for the day and winner of the medal for best Redbacks spirit was Aidan.  Only new to the game and our club this year, he led from the front with his tackling and determined defence and inspired all his teammates to hit with the shoulder on shorts, get some cheek on cheek and land on top.  Well done Aiden!

Unfortunately our regular photographer was at home in bed and our newly appointed cub reporter/snapper had a flat battery in his camera, so we only have a few snaps from one of the kind opposition coaches, who will no doubt be pouring over them to see if he can crack our attacking codes!

Great game, thanks Melbourne!

Our little U9s team is showing good signs of progress – I can’t wait to see what they can do next week as we take on the giants of Eltham.
