Congratulations to the Northern Panthers RUFC on hosting a successful Ladies Gala Day on Saturday. When we started our junior club in 2016 we were delighted to have 3 junior girls playing. We could dare to dream that one day we would have two junior girls teams and a senior women’s team representing our club at a ladies gala day event in 2018…and so it was on Saturday that our club stood proud, as our senior women played on the main field against the Uni Panthers, while on the fields either side our U15 girls played the Casey Crusaders and our U11 girls played against Powerhouse.
Our juniors, Amelia, Alice, Jaimie, Alannah, Zahlia, Tenille, Aroha, Ariella, Sophie (C) and AmelieĀ formed a guard of honour as the women took to the field and immediately ran out to play their games and our youngest stars wasted no time running the ball up and down the field trading tries with Powerhouse.
Powerhouse brought their A-game and really made our girls work hard but once we remembered how to spread out across the field and speed up the pace in defence we slowly clawed our way back into the game.
The next game was against the Melbourne Unicorns where we faced another difficult challenge.
The girls dug deep and really put in a effort to make us all very proud. The second half saw some great defence and some long passes and running tries. They showed why they remain well and truly at the top of the ladder, however, the other teams are now catching quickly and starting to pile on the pressure which will make for some great rugby at the back end of the season.
At the final whistle of the day all of the teams had emptied their tanks and shown that women and girls rugby is well and truly alive in Victoria, and the smiles on faces were there for all to see how awesome it is!
Please be sure to spread the word about our fantastic junior girls program and encourage sisters and friends to come along and try our great game and see why female rugby is the fastest growing sport in the world!
